Virgin Atlantic selects Rockwell Collins to provide avionics for its A330 order

FARNBOROUGH, UK (July 21, 2010) - Rockwell Collins announced today that it has been selected by Virgin Atlantic to provide avionics equipment including the company's newly released digital radio altimeter for its fleet of 10 A330-300 aircraft. Deliveries of the fleet of 10 aircraft are scheduled to begin in spring 2011.

The contract was announced during a signing ceremony hosted at the Rockwell Collins chalet during the Farnborough 2010 airshow.

"This agreement signifies a renewal of our relationship with Virgin Atlantic - which goes back to Rockwell Collins selection on Virgin Atlantic's 747-400 fleet," said Jeff Standerski, vice president and general manager, Air Transport Systems for Rockwell Collins. "They've selected some of our most advanced avionics offerings, which will bring their pilots higher levels of situational awareness, as well as more precise navigation capabilities - ultimately contributing to Virgin Atlantic's ability to deliver a smoother ride, and the most efficient on-time service to their customers."

"Virgin Atlantic's selection of Rockwell Collins equipment is as a result of a rigorous and thorough selection process. The combination of technical excellence, coupled with an appealing commercial position, has secured the ongoing partnership between Virgin Atlantic and Rockwell Collins, and secured the best solution for the selected avionics package," said Sean Swain, general manager, Supply Chain for Virgin Atlantic.

Virgin Atlantic will be the launch customer for Rockwell Collins new Digital Low Range Altimeter (DLRA) LRA-2100. The DLRA system uses digital signal processing to gauge the aircraft's height above terrain. This newly developed system provides unprecedented accuracy, especially over challenging terrain and objects on approach. The smaller, lighter unit is a drop-in replacement for the LRA-900.

Additional avionics selected include:

  • Rockwell Collins' MultiScan™ Hazard Detection system is a fully automatic, hands-free airborne radar system. MultiScan provides optimal clutter-free weather displays that reduce pilot workload and enhances safety and passenger comfort by minimizing unexpected turbulence encounters.
  • The advanced GLU-925 Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR) provides the aircraft's primary position, velocity and time reference, and enables precision landing capability. It is the first MMR certified for precision landing using either Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) or Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). The receiver is the primary navigation sensor for all phases of flight, including the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) requirement of 0.1 n.m.
